This year’s Palme d’Or Winner Anora is set to arrive in the UK in November, and a new trailer has been revealed to mark its imminent release.
In May, writer-director Sean Baker’s Anora was crowned the Palme d’Or winner, the highest honour of the Cannes Film Festival. As with 2020’s’s Parasite, the prestigious Cannes award is often seen as the first step in a successful Oscars run. In a year where there’s no runaway contender for Best Picture thus far, there are plenty of people wondering if Anora can maintain its momentum and triumph at the Academy Awards.
The film follows Scream’s Mikey Madison, a stripper who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. What could possibly go wrong? Baker has tackled sex work in a couple of his prior films, Tangerine and Red Rocket. However, early reviews for Anora suggest that he’s assembled something really quite special, with Madison in particular coming on for high praise for her performance as the title character.

Anora hails from distributor Neon, which is enjoying a good year following the astounding commercial success of Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs. That film has picked up almost $110m worldwide from its theatrical run, from a production budget of just $20m.
The indie production company is also backing Asif Kapadia’s upcoming dystopian drama, 2073. Then there’s Steven Soderbergh’s supernatural thriller, Presence to look forward to, although we don’t yet know when that one is releasing.
Here in the UK, Universal Pictures UK is handling distribution for Anora so we should be looking at a wide release. You can catch the new trailer below ahead of the film’s release at the very start of next month.
