The documentary filmmaker’s first foray into fictional drama is on the way. Catch the 2073 trailer right here.

Asif Kapadia is known for his incredible documentaries, films that explore their subjects in a way that brings us close to them in a manner that few of his contemporaries can match. However, for his next project Kapadia is moving into uncharted territory. He has directed 2073, a fictionalised dystopian thriller that is set to make its world premiere today out of competition at the Venice Film Festival.

Here’s the synopsis: It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies, and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.

It doesn’t look like Kapadia is entirely shedding his documentarian roots though. The film stars Samantha Morton as “a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past – a past that happens to be our present, visualised through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s global crises of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality and global climate change.”

Naomi Ackie, recently seen in the excellent Blink Twice, and Hector Hewie also star. We don’t yet have any UK release details for this one. NEON have picked up North American distribution rights whilst Film4 have co-financed the project’s production. When we do hear a release date for the UK, we’ll let you know.

Here”s that 2073 trailer below.
