Thomasin McKenzie plays a shy girl working in a prison when new doctor Anne Hathaway catches her eye – here’s the new Eileen trailer.

William Oldroyd helms twisty, noirish thriller Eileen, adapted from the 2015 novel by Ottessa Moshfegh, who is credited for writing the screenplay alongside her husband Luke Goebel. UK distributor Universal has just released an official trailer for the film, which had its UK premiere at the London Film Festival. It’s due out in cinemas on 1st December.

Set in 1960s New England in a small town, Eileen (played by Last Night In Soho's Thomasin McKenzie) is stuck in a dead-end admin job at the local prison. She’s also stuck in terms of her home life, where she lives with her alcoholic, former police chief father (Shea Wigham). Her uneventful life just keeps on ticking over – that is, until she meets Rebecca.

The new, female counsellor of the prison is played with a charismatic magnetism by Anne Hathaway. Her glamour draws Eileen in, and the two gradually become friends. One night, that almost obsessive friendship takes an unexpected turn. To say any more would be spoiling it. We liked the film very much, though, and found it just the right amount of weird. You can read our review of it here.

This is British director William Oldryod's first film since 2016, when he helmed Lady Macbeth. That film starred Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis, and Naomi Ackie, and was nominated for the BAFTA award for Outstanding British Film. It dealt with dark themes similar to Eileen, like complicated relationships that take a dramatic turn for the worse (putting it lightly). Despite only having directed two features so far, Oldroyd seems to be particularly interested in making those kinds of twisted thrillers. We’d be very happy if studios continued allowing him to do so.
