Writer and director Jonathan Glazer is back with The Zone Of Interest, his first feature film in a decade, here’s the first trailer.

Jonathan Glazer doesn’t make many films, but when he does, it’s fair to say they make an impact. He exploded onto the scene in 2000 with Sexy Beast, which featured an Oscar nominated, powerhouse performance from Ben Kingsley alongside Ray Winstone. He followed it up with the underappreciated Birth and the dazzling Under The Skin.

Now, he’s back with Word War Two drama The Zone Of Interest. The brief synopsis reads as follows:

The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.

The cast also includes Freya Kreutzkam, Max Beck, Imogen Kogge, and Ralph Herforth.

Glazer directed from his own script, which he adapted from the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis.

The Zone Of Interest will be released in US cinemas on the 15th December, so a UK release shouldn’t be far behind. It has already been selected as the British entry for Best International Feature Film at next year’s Academy Awards.

This is also the latest film from A24, a production company beloved for its commitment to arthouse filmmaking; that approach is likely to change imminently, as it’s announced a pivot to action movies and “big IP projects.”

Watch the trailer below, which hints at the same kind of intensity and unsettling tone Glazer brought to his previous films:
