Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt is reportedly in talks to play one of the leads in Steven Spielberg’s next film, due out in 2026.

Having co-starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer last year, Emily Blunt could be about to work with another household name director. According to a new report, she’s in ‘early talks’ to play one of the leads in Steven Spielberg’s currently untitled 2026 film.

According to Deadline, the secretive film will have two lead characters, one of which would most likely be Blunt if the deal’s made.

As we heard last month, Universal and Amblin have set the release date for Spielberg’s mystery film: the 15th May 2026. That’s a similar summer slot to Spielberg’s biggest, most accessible movies, including Jaws (June 1975), E.T: The Extra Terrestrial (June 1982), Jurassic Park (June 1993) and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (May 2008). We’ll quietly gloss over that last one.

It could be a clue that what Spielberg has in store is something tentpole-y along those lines; David Koepp, who previously wrote (or co-wrote) Jurassic Park and its 1997 sequel, The Lost World, War Of The Worlds and Crystal Skull for Spielberg is behind the script, and the rumour is that it’s about UFOs.

If true, then Spielberg could be about to bring his career full circle, given that one of his first ever films was Firelight, a 1964 film about flying saucers he made when he was still a teenager. Although much of it has since been lost, Firelight famously formed the (loose) basis for 1977’s Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

Again, little is known about what Spielberg’s up to at present, but with its release less than two years away, we’ll likely hear more as its production gears up.
