A brand new Evil Dead film is on the way, which looks to be a fresh spin-off movie rather than a direct Evil Dead Rise follow-on.

The decade gap between 2013’s Evil Dead reboot and last year’s box office success Evil Dead Rise brought with it the promise that there wouldn’t be such a long gap between future installments in the franchise. And while we wait to see if Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will be signed up to direct a follow-up to that film (on the one hand, he expressed interest in further sequels, on the other, he’s said to be in demand), a spin-off movie is set to keep the franchise bubbling along.

The film does not yet have a name, but it does appear to have a director. Sebastien Vanicek, who directed last year’s success Infested, has reportedly (thanks, Deadline) now been signed up to write and helm a new Evil Dead movie.

It does appear to be relatively early days for the film, and as such, no story details have thus far been revealed. Nor does it appear to be a direct follow-on from Evil Dead Rise either.

Instead, it’s being described as a spin-off so far, one that happens to have Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell among its production team. Ghost House Pictures, the production outfit co-run by Sam Raimi (along with Robert Tapert) is overseeing the project.

In terms of who ends up distributing the film, it may well end up split again. Studiocanal had the UK rights to Evil Dead Rise, while Warner Bros put that one out in America. At one stage, Warner Bros was believed to be considering sending the film direct to streaming, before rolling the dice on a theatrical outing. It seems almost certain that whatever this latest Evil Dead film turns out to be, that it’ll be seeing the inside of a cinema.

No further details at the moment, though. But as and when we hear more, we’ll be letting you know.
