Far Cry 5 gets next-gen update, will be free to play for one weekend

Ubisoft gives Far Cry 5 a 60FPS update on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and it’ll be free to play for a weekend this month.

 

Montana cult simulator Far Cry 5 is five years old this month, and to celebrate, Ubisoft has given its US-set sandbox a current-gen refresh.

If you own a copy of Far Cry 5 and a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, you’ll now be able to enjoy the game at a silky 60 frames per second – so in other words, getting randomly attacked by a wolverine outside a remote petrol station now looks smoother than ever. As we wrote recently, Far Cry 5 is arguably the best unofficial A-Team game ever made.

If you don’t own a copy of Far Cry 5, there’s some other news you might like: Ubisoft’s making the game free to play for one weekend only, between March 23 to 27. The offer applies to all platforms, too, so you’ll be able to give Far Cry 5 a test spin whether you own a console or PC.

Looking to the future, Ubisoft has two further games in the series on the horizon – a single-player sequel to Far Cry 6 that will probably be called Far Cry 7, and an as-yet untitled multiplayer take on the series. Reports suggest that the multiplayer Far Cry will be set in the chilly hinterlands of Alaska, and will be a extraction-based shooter. Both projects are said to be in development at Ubisoft Montreal, and will take advantage of the firm’s proprietary Snowdrop engine.

Ubisoft has had a few wobbles of late, with a number of cancelled games and delays – its pirate-flavoured Skull & Bones feels as though it’s been in development for decades, and still doesn’t have a precise launch date. The other games on Ubisoft’s slate include Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and remakes of Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia.

Far Cry 7, meanwhile, is reportedly scheduled for release in 2025.
