The Creator marks Gareth Edwards’ return to filmmaking following a seven-year hiatus.

One film project that has reportedly been garnering a rather large buzz this year is Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, a high-concept science fiction film from a director has been off the scene for a fair few years. Although we’ll likely never know the full story, it’s believed that Edwards experienced a pretty rough time during the making of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, eventually losing final cut on the project.

He’s taken an extended break from filmmaking in the years since, and seems to have been extremely picky about his next project and who can blame him? Happily though, his return to science fiction seems to have caused quite the positive stir and we’re really looking forward to The Creator, given that it tackles a rather relevant topic that we’re dealing with at the moment: the uneasy potential of artificial intelligence.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington) is a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan). He is soon recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war – and mankind itself.’

Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles also feature, and you can catch the first trailer below. The film created up a huge buzz when a portion of it was previewed at last month’s CinemaCon and we’re hoping the film’s release in September (via 20th Century Studios) marks the beginining of a successful second act for a British filmmaker who possesses bags of potential. Here’s that first trailer below.
