Adam Sandler’s next part of his Netflix contract gives us Happy Gilmore 2. Here’s the trailer for the film, due this summer.

Happy Gilmore 2, Netflix’s upcoming sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1995 cult comedy is a project that seems to have simply zoomed through the Netflix machine, even by the studio’s rather zippy standards. Pre-production on the project reportedly only began in May of last year and by November, everything was shot and in the can. By February, post-production was all wrapped up and we’ve been expecting a first proper trailer to arrive for a little while now, given that the film is set to appear on the streaming platform on July 25th.

The sequel will see Adam Sandler return to the role of Happy Gilmore, a failed hockey player who finds himself becoming an unlikely hero at a new sport: golf. The film was one of a string of 90s hits for Sandler as he established himself as a bankable comedy star. The film grossed $41m from a $12m budget and went on to sell many a DVD in the years after too..

The cast for this one looks fun. Along with Sandler, Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen return from the 1996 original and will be joined by Nick Swardson, Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Travis Kelce and the loose-lipped John Daly.

Murder Mystery’s Kyle Newacheck directs and we’re hoping to see Sandler (along with his rage-filled golfer creation) roll back the years here and give us something as anarchic and angry as the original film. Sadly, there’s not a lot of that to be seen in the film’s first proper trailer and an early gag hints at how times – and Sandler’s movie star roles – have evolved over the decade into something a little more sanguine.

As for what Happy Gilmore 2 does eventually look like, we’ll have to wait and see. There is also a noticeable cameo in the trailer that you might not want spoiled if you definitely are planning on watching the film, which will arrive on Netflix on July 25th.

Here’s the trailer below.
