Past Lives director Celine Song brings us Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Trailer here.

Past Lives was an incredible debut from writer-director Celine Song. The A24 romantic drama didn’t just charm the independent crowd at Sundance either; it went on to garner nods for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at last year’s Oscars.

For almost as long as we’ve known about Song’s follow-up, Materialists, we’ve been recalibrating our expectations given that it’s supposed to be a markedly different type of film. A24 is once again backing the filmmaker, but this time around, Song is working with a bigger budget and major Hollywood stars.

One of the film’s producers said last year that ā€œIt feels like she makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice.ā€

It stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal and is set to ‘follow a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker’ (Johnson) who finds herself torn between two men, a smooth operator played by Pascal, her imperfect ex, an impeccably-ruffled looking Evans, sporting the kind of effortless bed head style that could only be painstakingly crafted by a talented hair and make-up department.

A24 has set the film for a nationwide June release in the US, meaning we can probably expect to see it here in the UK around the same time. Along with the summer release spot, the trailer’s style and tone emphasises that this is going to be a more commercial endeavour from Song and A24.

We don’t see enough romantic comedies in prime release slots in cinemas, so let’s hope that this one is enough of a success to bring other projects from the same genre back towards theatrical exhibition.

The film will hit UK cinemas on 13th June 2025. Here’s the trailer below.
