The Succession creative team of Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod will be at the helm of the Harry Potter television series.
Ever since it was announced, Harry Potter fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the television series. A gargantuan undertaking, the aim is to adapt from book per series, meaning an extremely long term commitment to whichever creative team took on the challenge.
There was fierce competition for the job. It was reported earlier this year that a a series of pitch meetings were being held between Warner Bros and a variety of writers, all of whom pitched their take on the show.
According to Deadline, Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod were the successful duo, they are the first names to officially be attached, as writer and director respectively. They are best known for working on hit HBO drama Succession. Gardiner is no stranger to fantasy television, penning several episodes of the BBC version of His Dark Materials, while Mylod directed many of the most celebrated episodes of Succession, as well as shows like The Royle Family and Game Of Thrones. Most recently he directed The Menu.
Several aspects of the show are yet to be confirmed, including, perhaps most crucially, the trio who will take on the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione.
The other bit of news that landed recently is that the show is no longer at Max, but has instead moved to HBO. What this means in practical terms remains to be seen, but it was described as “a strategy rethink”. The show will be a co-production between Warner Bros and author J.K. Rowling’s Brontë Film and TV, with Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts acting as executive producers.
Lots more news to come, and it seems as if the show is finally picking up momentum. It certainly needs to, as the first series is currently scheduled to be broadcast in 2026, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
