Downton Abbey is heading back to the big screen for a new installment ā€“ and itā€™s bringing back some newly-nominated facesā€¦

Hold onto your overs and side your ways, Paul Giamatti is launching straight out of his The Holdovers Oscar nomination back into Downton in a new screen adaptation from original scribe Julian Fellowes.

Giamatti was last seen gracing Downtonā€™s many steps in the seriesā€™ 2013 Christmas special, where he played ā€œfree spirited playboyā€ Harold Levinson.

UPDATE: Universal has now confirmed the release date for the film: 12th September 2025. Back to our original storyā€¦.

Simon Curtis is returning to direct after taking charge on 2022ā€™s Downton Abbey: A New Era, while the returning cast includes series mainstays Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Michelle Dockery.

Itā€™s a good job the house is so big.

The Downton Abbey Cinematic Universe has proved a surprise British international success story, launching out of the hit ITV show (which ended in 2015) with 2019ā€™s Downton Abbey ā€“ which earned $194m worldwide.

The last instalment in the franchise boasts the unlikely title of the second-widest cinema release in the UK, debuting a couple of Aprils ago in 746 locations (the current wideness-leader, No Time To Die, opened in 772. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker takes third with 740. We love facts).
