Ridley Scott’s dystopian classic is back as a Prime Video limited series. Here’s a new trailer for Blade Runner 2099, streaming in November.
Update: Following years in production, it seems almost strange that Blade Runner 2099 is now only weeks away from its premiere. The TV spin-off from both Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic and Denis Villeneuve’s elegant 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, the production has seen delays, shifts in filming location and changes in director. But judging by the trailer below, the results look positively sumptuous.
As the title implies, Blade Runner 2099 offers a further hop forward into the future (the original Blade Runner was set in the distant year 2019…). By now, the tables have turned and it’s Replicants at the top of the social tree; old-fashioned, vanilla humans are now the underclass.
Against this backdrop, another noir-ish detective thriller unfolds – this one pivoting around characters played by Hunter Schafer and Michelle Yeoh. An official synopsis reads:
Cora [Schafer], a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen [Yeoh], a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.
On a visual front, it’s all a striking blend of both Scott and Villeneuve’s aesthetics – and as if to prove that author Philip K Dick hasn’t quite been forgotten in the middle of all of this, note the huge neon sign advertising the Church of Mercer – a reference to Dick’s source novel, Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep. It’ll be interesting to see if showrunner Silka Luisa’s series, with its additional running time, will have more space to explore other ideas in the original book.
Blade Runner 2099 premieres on the 25th November on Prime Video.

7th June 2024: After delays and a shift in production from Belfast to Prague, the sci-fi spin off series Blade Runner 2099 is now taking shape. Production is currently underway, and it was announced in May that Michelle Yeoh had joined the cast.
A new report suggests that Prime Video’s expensive-sounding TV series has now cast its lead: Hunter Schafer, perhaps best known for her role as Jules Vaughn in the hit show, Euphoria. Her other work includes The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, and a role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming Kinds Of Kindness.
The story comes via Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (brought to our attention by World of Reel), who has also revealed a previously-unseen plot description. It goes like this:

In Los Angeles 2099, Cora (Schafer) lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she assumes one final identity and is forced to partner with Olwen (Yeoh), a Blade Runner who’s confronting the end of her life. The two are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.
In development for several years, Blade Runner 2099 had Jodie Comer attached as a star at one stage – presumably in the lead role of Cora – but she exited last May. The series has also had a change of director, with Jeremy Podeswa replaced in February by Jonathan van Tulleken, who recently enjoyed critical success with the FX adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun.
Writer and producer Silka Luisa, whose work includes Shining Girls and the most recent Halo TV series, is Blade Runner 2099′s showrunner.
