Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series is finally moving forward with some speed. Not only did we get confirmation that Sophie Turner had landed the role of Lara Craft a couple months ago, the series is now also looking to cast some supporting characters.
One of the bigger names circling a role, as reported by Deadline, is Sigourney Weaver. There’s no indication to who she might be playing as of yet, but if she does officially join the project, I’m sure we’ll know sooner rather than later.
The Tomb Raider series, which doesn’t yet have an official title, has been in the works for quite some time now and we even thought it was dead earlier this year, before it came back to life like Neo in The Matrix. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing the series and acting as executive producer and co-showrunner with Chad Hodge and Jonathan Van Tulleken, who will also be directing. Production is set to start next January.
Before she can start thinking about Tomb Raider, Weaver has to finish off the global press tour for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire And Ash. The third film in the franchise will see Weaver returning to the role of teenager Kiri, a Na’Vi magically born from Weaver’s original character Grace’s dead Na’Vi avatar. It all makes sense, kind of.
Although Cameron teased that he had ideas and even scripts ready for many more Avatar films, Avatar: Fire And Ash seems like it might be the last one of the Avatar films. After all, these are expensive films made, as admitted by Cameron himself.
“It is one metric f**k ton of money, which means we have to make two metric f**k tons of money to make a profit,” he told Matt Belloni on his podcast The Town With Matt Belloni (here via IGN). “I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money. The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?”
We’ll just have to wait and see when it comes to future Avatar projects, but at least we know Tomb Raider is moving forward at a steady pace.
