Initially billed as a book, an exhaustive look at the making of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is now an app, Steven Soderbergh has revealed.
Earlier this year, Steven Soderbergh mentioned something called Production 02074 on his personal website. Not long after, word began to circulate that it was a book dedicated to the making of Jaws; something the filmmaker had “been working on forever,” according to this piece at The Playlist.
Soderbergh has now revealed, however, that what began life as a book has now become an interactive app. Speaking to BK Mag, the director explained that the app will allow users to explore a daily breakdown of how Steven Spielberg’s classic was shot – what footage was captured on each day, and how the famously difficult shoot overcame its challenges and slowly pieced together.
The app will also contain “25,000 words of me talking about the film,” Soderbergh explained – and while the multimedia project has clearly been in the works for a while, it sounds as though its development is nearly finished.
“It started out as a book about directing in general,” Soderbergh said, “and then became a book about the shooting of Jaws, which allows me to digress whenever I want to, to talk about directing in general. I’m waiting, literally as we speak, I’m supposed to get a beta version of the app that I can navigate and look through and give notes on.”
Jaws was, Soderbergh adds, “the movie that made me want to make movies.”
Having seen the nature-strikes-back thriller at a Florida cinema in 1975, the 20-something Soderbergh emerged “transformed” – and began thinking about becoming a filmmaker himself.
“I was convinced that it had in it, the double helix of how to direct a movie, because it has everything,” he said. “It has shots that last 27 frames. It has shots that last three minutes. It has humor. It has pathos. It has tension. It just has everything, you know? Like, if you were literally going to give somebody a directing tool kit, it’s a pretty good movie to start with because it’s got every sort of directorial approach that you might need to make a movie, except for the fact that it’s linear.”
We’ll bring you more on Production 02074 – including a release date and platforms – as we get it.
