It’s been some months before we’ve heard anything related to Lucasfilm’s long-discussed Star Wars spin-off movie, said to be called New Jedi Order. Essentially telling the further adventures of Rey, it’ll see Daisy Ridley return as a mentor figure in a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. That is, if it actually happens.

Speaking to IGN, Ridley has suggested that, while the spin-off still isn’t in front of cameras, that doesn’t mean it won’t get made – scripts taking years to come to fruition is all part of the job, she says.

“Honestly, there are scripts that I read five years ago, and now I’ve gone, ‘Oh, maybe they will actually happen,’” Ridley said. “I think, over the years, I’ve learned how the reality of getting any film made is so massive. The hurdles are vast… But with this particularly, I know that incredible voices and creatives are part of it, and I know the wait will be worth it.”

Earlier this year, filmmaker George Nolfi talked to us about his thinking behind the script he’s writing for New Jedi Order. The spin-off might, he said, have a political angle buried beneath the fantastical action.

“If you think about George Lucas, the six movies that he did, and the universe that he created, it’s actually very steeped in broad notions of politics,” Nolfi said. “It’s not talking about today, per se, but there’s the Empire’s Nazism slash Roman Empire. The democracy of the Roman Empire collapsing and becoming an empire and the perennial story of human beings organising themselves and against chaos, and then the tools that help human societies tamp down on chaos becomes oppression.

“So that is really very core to what I think George Lucas was trying to talk about. And one of the wonderful things about science fiction and Star Wars – which is more almost science fantasy or space opera – is that you can raise the deepest issues without it feeling like a philosophy class, or a political science class, or something I read in the newspaper today…

“It can be about real things, deep things.”

New Jedi Order may still be a way off, but Lucasfilm have other irons in the Star Wars fire. The Mandalorian And Grogu is out in May 2026, and the marketing drum is already being beaten for Star Wars: Starfighter, due in 2027. If those are a success, maybe we’ll see that Rey movie before the decade’s out. And maybe even that cancelled Ben Solo spin-off, starring Adam Driver, which has triggered a fan campaign in the hope that Disney will revive it.

“I like when people join forces – excuse the pun – from all around the world, all different sorts of people,” Ridley said of that fan campaign. “I felt joyful about how it went down.”
