A bizarre accident sees Michael Mann rushed to hospital, just a month or two before Heat 2 finally starts filming.
A bizarre story just as the long-gestating Heat 2 ramps up for production: it’s writer and director, Michael Mann, appears to have shot himself in the leg.
For the avoidance of doubt, this was a deliberate act. Rather, Mann was at a gun range over the weekend, when a holstered firearm accidentally discharged. This left him rushed to ambulance, with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The 83-year old is set to start shooting Heat 2 in January, with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Stephen Graham and Christian Bale amongst the extensive ensemble for the film. Given how long it’s taken to get the movie off the ground, and align the schedules of everyone concerned, there’s not a lot of wiggle room there, had Michael Mann’s injury been a serious one.
Thankfully though, it doesn’t appear to be. It’s been confirmed that Mann was treated in hospital over the weekend, but has since been released and is apparently okay. The early report on this is now suggesting that there’s going to be no known knock-on to the production of Heat 2 which should still be starting on time.
All concerned must be breathing out there too. That Mann is okay, and that the film’s logistics are likely to remain unaltered.
It’s nonetheless one of the oddest stories of a potential delay to a movie that I can remember reporting on. Cameras should still be rolling in spite of the incident at the start of 2027, and the best guess is that Heat 2 should be on cinema screens in 2028, over 30 years since the release of the original classic film.
More news on the film as we hear it. Here’s wishing Michael Mann a much quieter week than the weekend he’s just had.
