Practical Magic 2 has been in the works for a while now and Warner Bros has finally released a trailer for the film that’s coming to cinemas later this year.

Take a look at the Practical Magic 2 trailer before we dive into it.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock return to their roles as Gillian and Sally Owens with Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also reprising their roles as the sisters’ equally magical aunts. Lee Pace is also joining the cast in a very mysterious role and Joey King will play Sally’s daughter Kylie who was played by Evan Rachel Wood in the original film.

Susanne Bier is directing from a script by Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett.

Here’s a proper synopsis: Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, Practical Magic 2 returns to a world steeped in moonlit mischief and powerful ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all in a must-see cinematic event of fun, magic and mayhem.

I’ll admit it’s been a while since I’ve watched Griffin Dunne’s magical 1998 original, but I have a distinct memory of it not being that comedic. In fact, a teenage me was rather upset by some of its themes.

Here come some spoilers for the original film, so turn away if you haven’t seen it.

In the first film, not only are the sisters plagued by the Owens’ family curse of their loved ones – the men at least – inevitably dying, but they end up killing Gillian’s boyfriend Jimmy (played by Goran Visnjic).

The twist? Jimmy was an abusive serial killer, who kind of had it coming and the film leaned more into the sisters’ attempts at freeing themselves, from the curse, from grief, from abuse. Sure, Practical Magic had its moment of humor. Nicole Kidman slapping her hips and telling the townswomen to “hold on to your husbands” remains an all-timer.

Warner Bros. did also sell the first film almost as a rom-com as is evident from the original trailer:

It remains to be seen whether Practical Magic 2 is also just being sold as a comedy but will also have a few more tricks up its sleeve when it hits UK cinemas on 11th September.
