A24’s expensive fantasy videogame adaptation is coming out in 2028, with Alex Garland directing and Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce and Cailee Spaeny starring.

A quarter of a century ago, New Line Cinema bet a six figure sum that an adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings would be a hit, and the result was a much-loved classic.

Now it’s the turn of another independent production company, A24, to take a gamble on an expensive fantasy adaptation. It’s sinking a reported $100m (or more) into Elden Ring – a non-interactive version of the hit videogame developed by FromSoftware.

Alex Garland will write and direct, making this his first foray into the dark fantasy genre – he’s previously better known for his sci-fi and horror, having previously brought us the likes of Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men and Civil War. (We also spoke to him last year for his screenwriting work on the horror sequel, 28 Years Later.)

With filming now underway, A24 has announced additions to the cast and a shiny release date: expect to see Elden Ring in cinemas on the 3rd March 2028.

Among the new names added to the cast you’ll find, per The Hollywood Reporter, regular Garland collaborator Sonoya Mizuno, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Emma Laird, Jefferson Hall and Peter Serafinowicz. They’ll be joining the previously announced Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny and Nick Offerman.

Released in 2022, Elden Ring was an acclaimed open-world action adventure, directed by Dark Souls’ Hidetaka Miyazaki and with lore written by George RR Martin. The player took on the role of the Tarnished, an outcast roaming a dark world called the Lands Between, seeking out and slaying demigods with the aim of re-assembling bits of a shattered, magical ring.

Elden Ring is one of the biggest games of all time, so A24 will be banking on there being an army of fans who’ll be keen to see its shadowy, monster-filled world realised on the big screen.

We’ll bring you more on Garland’s opus as we get it.
