Adam Wingard has given an update on the Thundercats movie, which is still active. It’s just chasing its tale a bit by the sounds of it.
In the year when a bunch of us finally went to see a brand new Masters Of The Universe film at the movies – one that happened to be in development on and off for a decade or two – a natural question presented itself: what the hell’s happened to the Thundercats film?
A movie was first announced, wouldn’t you know it, nearly 20 years ago, and it’s gone through a fair number of iterations since then (including a test footage leak back in 2011).
It was back in 2021 that the name of Adam Wingard first entered the conversation. Wingard, the director of movies such as You’re Next and The Guest got signed up by Warner Bros to make 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong (and then Godzilla Vs Kong: The Next Empire), and clearly made an impression, as the studio lured him in for Thundercats.
Regular collaborator Simon Barrett was to co-write the script, but then Wingard became an in-demand man (he was linked with Face/Off 2 around the same time, you might recall.) As well as making his second Monsterverse movie for Warner Bros and Legendary, he’s been knee deep in Netflix’s new movie, Onslaught.
And it’s while he’s been promoting Onslaught that, rightly, the Thundercats question has come up. Just when are we going to see Lion-o doing battle on the big screen?
‘Not soon’ appears to be the answer.
Chatting to Polygon, Wingard put the blame at the fact his career his going off in lots of different places. “I think it’s just a matter of finding to time to really re-concentrate and re-engage with it”, he told the outlet.
Not that it’s been off his mind. He said that “we did a new draft at the beginning of this year”, but then it had to be put on hold while Onslaught was being finished. “It’s not dead. It lives”, he insisted. But it’s also not the main thing that Adam Wingard is currently working on. The live action/CG Thundercats thus pouts in its basket for the time, making its feelings known in the kitty litter.
More when we hear it. Just don’t expect it soon…
