Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones are to star in the Netflix thriller Here Comes The Flood, directed by City Of God's Fernando Meirelles.
Netflix has announced quite a coup this morning, having attracted Denzel Washington to headline its upcoming heist thriller, Here Comes The Flood. Washington’s potent star power will be buttressed by two other impressive names, with Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones joining the project.
It’s said to be a ‘non-linear’ and ‘unconventional’ heist thriller about “a bank guard, a teller and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses” according to a plot description on The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story.
The script is by Simon Kinberg, one-time steward of the X-Men series and potential overseer of a new Star Wars trilogy. In the director’s chair will be Fernando Meirelles, who made 2002’s City Of God, the Brazilian gangster drama that earned an Oscar nomination and marked Meirelles out as a stunning filmmaker of verite-style action.
The project has reportedly sat at Netflix for years and was developed while Scott Stuber was still heading up the film division. Since Dan Lin took over that role just over a year ago, charged with realising the mantra of ‘make them cheaper, make them better’ the project has seemingly morphed into a prestige project, given the quality ensemble it has attracted.
Meirelles is certainly the kind of kinetic director who could offer something visually thrilling to a project such as this one. Over 20 years later, the brief heist sequences in City Of God still make our head spin thinking about them. The film’s non-linear narrative is also nothing short of exceptional. That’s two key elements that Meirelles will be revisiting in Here Comes The Flood, based on the little that we know about it.
Getting Denzel Washington is undoubtedly a big win for Netflix, and will follow his highly-anticipated next collaboration with Spike Lee in the upcoming Akira Kurosawa remake, Highest 2 Lowest. The actor is also said to be working on an adaptation of Othello. Production on Here Comes The Flood is set to begin this autumn so we can expect the film to arrive later next year.
