True Detective season 5 is heading into production this year and will hit our screens in 2027, HBO has revealed. More titbits on the new season below.
There has been a lot of great TV recently, but we’re still thinking about the finale of True Detective: Night Country from last year. Thankfully, the series was quickly renewed for another season, but we’re still facing a bit of a wait.
HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi has been chatting about HBO’s upcoming TV shows at the premiere of White Lotus season 3 and made mention of True Detective. The anthology series’ fifth season is set to go into production in a few months time, and Orsi said we can expect the new season in 2027, as reported by Deadline. Casting has not yet been announced, but Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all episodes of season 4 is on board.
The fourth season focused on two (true) detectives, played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, as they investigated the mysterious disappearance of eight men in the brutally cold conditions of Ennis, Alaska. Previous seasons have starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Mahershala Ali, Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.
True Detective season 5 is also swapping Alaska for a less chilly environment. If you were hoping for more Ennis-based mysteries in the new season, we have bad news for you.
“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” Orsi said. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
Although it doesn’t look like Foster or Reis will return in the new season, López did tease that there will be a connection between Night Country and the new season. The director told the New York Post in December that “there’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything.”
Colour us intrigued. We’ll bring you more news on True Detective when they reach our news desk.
