Could it actually be happening? Highlander, starring Henry Cavill, is finally set to go before cameras this coming autumn. We think.

Well, blimey. Considering the time-spanning nature of the Highlander franchise, perhaps it’s appropriate it’s taken so long to get a planned remake off the ground. I was a year into starting Den Of Geek I think, all the way back in 2008, when I first wrote something about a planned new movie. The idea then was to do a remake or reimagining of sorts, and over the course of nearly two decades, a procession of people have come and come. I’m old enough to remember when Vinnie Jones was in the running, and when Ryan Reynolds was reportedly cast.

More recently, John Wick director Chad Stahelski had been committed to the film, but then he was dragged into surgery on the upcoming Ballerina movie. That delayed the new Highlander, which is now set up at Amazon MGM Studios, after Lionsgate eventually backed away from it.

And it sounds as if there’s actual progress.

For around two years now, Henry Cavill has been the installed lead of the new Highlander, and he remains attached to the film at the time of writing. Now we learn too Chad Stahelski – a man with a busy slate of his own – is set to start production on the film this coming autumn according to Collider.

This time, it might actually be happening.

That said, the useful rule of thumb here is to not believe it’s an actual thing until cameras are out and people see Henry Cavill waving his sword around. Until then, a grain of salt is useful.

The plan though will be to release the film in 2027 or 2028, and if it’s the latter that’ll be a full 20 years since the idea of a new Highlander movie was first reported.

More on the new Highlander as and when we hear of it.
