Bette Midler has given a sort-of update on the state of Hocus Pocus 3, implying a script both exists and isn’t finished yet.
When shall thee three meet again? In thunder, lighting or on Disney+?
Hocus Pocus star Bette Midler has been conjured from a witch’s brew to give a tiny update on the script for the upcoming Hocus Pocus 3. The gist? There is one, and it’s not all bad.
Appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, original film star Bette Midler seemed enthusiastic about the project, which Disney greenlit in June 2023 following the streaming success of Hocus Pocus 2.
“They sent a script, and a lot of it was brilliant,” Midler said. “Now we’re trying to figure out what it is, where it’s going to be and how much it’s going to cost.”
“They” is, presumably, Hocus Pocus 2 scribe Jen D’Angelo, already confirmed as returning to writing duties with Anne Fletcher back in the director’s chair.
Work on the three-quel seems to have been slow going since 2023. Star Sarah Jessica Parker told Cohen in July that the team “had been having some conversations”, but had nothing concrete to share. With the film planned for a Disney+ release rather than a trip to the cinema, the studio seems in no rush to get these witches three on their broomsticks and out the door, which is no bad thing.
The original Hocus Pocus faltered with audiences and critics on its 1993 release, but video and TV repeats over the years have turned it into a beloved “spooky season” classic. The sequel became Disney+’s most-watched film premiere of all time on its 2022 release, and the most-streamed film in the US across all platforms in its opening weekend.
