Disney is said to be concerned that an expensive Super Bowl trailer for The Mandalorian And Grogu hasn’t generated the excitement hoped of it.

For fans of the TV show, the latest trailer for The Mandalorian And Grogu likely hit the spot. But will those less versed in The Mandalorian and its western-inspired antics turn up in cinemas for the big-screen spin-off?

That appears to be the question Disney executives are asking themselves in the build-up to the film’s release this May.

According to a lengthy piece about Disney published by Variety, there are internal fears that a brief teaser trailer, shown during the Super Bowl, didn’t “generate the kind of excitement the marketing team was hoping to spark.”

This is the one briefly described above: the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda riding through a snowy landscape, possibly on Hoth, in a sleigh pulled by Tauntauns.

Again, it’s the kind of imagery that will please fans of the show, but also highlights something we’ve seen in the other promos released from the spin-off film so far: it’s heavy on imagery that will be familiar to existing Mandalorian viewers, but light on the kind of drama that might tempt in more general audiences.

Beyond the appearance of familiar characters from previous Star Wars outings, does anyone really know what The Mandalorian And Grogu is actually about?

Even Disney’s own synopsis is vague:

“As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.“

As you’re no doubt aware, The Mandalorian And Grogu is the first new Star Wars movie to appear in cinemas since The Rise Of Skywalker before the pandemic. The question remains whether the cinema-going public will treat this latest movie as an event worth paying to see in cinemas, or whether they’ll treat it like a TV special they can catch on Disney+ in a few months’ time.

We’ve already seen how the box office fate of some Marvel movies may have been affected to a degree by Disney’s own streaming service.

The Mandalorian And Grogu is in cinemas from the 22nd May.
