Robert Eggers will tackle the long awaited Labyrinth 2, and itā€™s now been announced. A bit more information here.

Itā€™s been an exciting week for Robert Eggers. His remake of Nosferatu has been hugely successful, and it was recently confirmed that his next film will be Werwulf, due out at the end of 2026. Even got through the spell checker, that.

But thereā€™s more! According to Deadline, the filmmaker has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures.

The original Labyrinth is a much loved cult classic from 1986. It saw the great Jim Henson direct from a screenplay by Monty Python member Terry Jones.

The story follows sixteen year old Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a treacherous maze in order to save her baby brother from The Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Throughout her journey, Sarah encounters a variety of magical creatures and challenges that test her skills and maturity. It is also remembered for a number of innovative sequences of puppetry from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about Eggersā€™ film is that it will not be a remake, but a direct sequel. There are currently no details about the plot, or if any cast members from the original will reprise their roles. Bowie sadly passed away in 2016.

Several directors have been attached to a Labyrinth sequel over the years, including Fede Alvarez and Scott Derrickson, with a script by Maggie Levin also written. All of that is being left behind though, it seems.

Eggers will co-write a new script with Sjón, with whom he also wrote The Northman and Werewulf. Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson executive producing.

The news comes hot on the heels of Nosferatu receiving Oscar nominations in the Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design and Makeup and Hairstyling categories.

Weā€™ll keep you updated as we hear more. Labyrinth is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
