Secret Cinema returns, after three-year gap

Secret Cinema, sort of under new ownership, will be back this summer with a Grease production taking place in London.

Considering how much it used to dominate some of the UK entertainment website headlines, things have been awfully quiet in the world of Secret Cinema for the last few years. Right up until the pesky pandemic, it was putting on premium priced event screenings of films, surrounded by attractions and such like related to the movie in question. Films such as Back To The Future, The Empire Strikes Back and Dirty Dancing were amongst the higher profile attractions. Over time, the price went up and the pushback grew, but tickets still sold in great numbers.

Covid-19 though changed everything, and a controlling interest in the company was sold. That deal went through in November 2022, with TodayTix Production Holdings Limited taking a 75% controlling stake in Secret Cinema. Since then, very little. The last shows were Guardians Of The Galaxy events earlier on in 2022, but since the controlling ownership change, there’s been nothing.

Well, until now. The new owners have finally announced the return of Secret Cinema, and it’s coming this summer with something based around the classic musical Grease. Somewhat inevitably it’s taking place in the London area, at Battersea Park, and it’s being billed as ‘Grease: the immersive movie musical’. I have fond memories of seeing the 20th anniversary release of Grease in Wigan and being sat next to someone who sang the whole way through, I’m not in a rush to be immersed again. But I accept I’m in the minority.

Ticket pricing and exact dates haven’t yet been announced, but a website is live here, where you can register your interest and get priority access.

In the meantime, I’m still waiting for Secret Cinema to do a Crank or Geostorm immersive experience. Only then will the bolts on wallet be released…
