In his first major role since his 2023 Oscar win, Ke Huy Quan stars in Love Hurts, and hereā€™s the trailer.

Academy Award-winner Ke Huy Quanā€™s new film? Thatā€™d be Love Hurts, produced by 87North, a company which has had huge success in recent years with the John Wick franchise, Nobody and Violent Night. Veteran stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio makes his directorial debut from a screenplay by Matthew Murray and Josh Stoddard.

Letā€™s get to the point fast: hereā€™s the trailerā€¦

The synopsis reads as follows:

From 87North—producers of the groundbreaking action films Nobody, Violent Night, Atomic Blonde, The Fall Guy—comes a visceral, high-octane story of wrath and revenge. Ke Huy Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ā€œFor Saleā€ signs bloom. He receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Ariana DeBose), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. Sheā€™s not happy. Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, he must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.

The cast also includes Sean Astin, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, Marshawn Lynch and André Eriksen.

Itā€™s a welcome return to the screen for Ke Huy Quan. He began his career playing Short Round opposite Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom, and then went on to play Data in The Goonies (which also starred Sean Astin, making Love Hurts a belated reunion for the two actors). After a few more roles, Quan took a hiatus from acting for almost 20 years, choosing instead to become a fight choreographer and action director.

And then he was back before the camera.

In 2023, Quan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in The Danielsā€™ film Everything, Everywhere All At Once. His comeback was warmly received by the film industry, and their was a flood of goodwill and positive comments to both Huan and Brendan Fraser, whose terrific performance in The Whale was also hailed as a brilliant return after a long time away from the big screen.

Whether Love Hurts gets the same acclaim remains to be seen. For now, we await a UK release date for the movie.
