Kevin Smith has been chatting about how Mallrats 2 came back to life.

It’s been a little stop-start for writer/director Kevin Smith where the sequel to his second movie, Mallrats, is concerned. Backed by Universal, the film failed at the box office on its original release, but has built up a sizeable cult following since. And following the success of last year’s return to his View Askewniverse, Smith has resurrected his plans for a Mallrats sequel.

He got quite far down the road with a follow-up project before, MallBrats, before that project fell by the wayside. He used some of the material he penned for that in Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, but is now writing a brand new script, with a view to that or Clerks III being his next movie.

Chatting to Collider, he revealed how it bubbled to near the top of is list. “Because Universal did [Jay & Silent Bob Reboot], they were like ‘what do you want to do next?’ because they had a great time”.

Smith mentioned Mallrats, the one film of his that Universal has the rights to, and a sequel the studio had previously turned down. “’But we have this mall, we have this whole crew…’ and they were like, ‘alright, write a two-pager up.’”

Which is what Smith did. And he’s now putting together a story that’ll end with a comic convention taking place in the shopping mall of the original film. “We’re gonna make it happen”, Smith teased.

He’s planning to do another film this year, and it’s just a case now of which of his sequels comes first. We’ll keep you posted.
