The Irishman will be getting a limited cinema release, it’s been confirmed.
Bringing to a close negotiations that are said to have gone on for many months, Netflix has ceded to pressure and scheduled a theatrical run for the eagerly-awaited The Irishman, from director Martin Scorsese.
The movie stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci, and the film had already been confirmed for both the New York and London film festivals. Still, with its ultimately Oscar Best Picture loss for Roma earlier this year still a surprise, Netflix is aiming to go one better at next year’s awards. The Irishman might just be its best bet.
As such, it’s agreed to a bigger theatrical release than originally planned, and the movie will make its bow in US cinemas from November 1st. It’ll be a limited release, adding more screens over three weeks, before debuting on Netflix on November 27th.
It’s not clear just how many screens The Irishman will be playing on. Expect the first reviews of the film to land around this time next month.
