Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 sold over 2.5 million copies within 24 hours, making it a huge success for PlayStation.
Fans have been waiting for a new Spider-Man game for what feels like centuries. It’s only been five years since the first Spider-Man game and three years since its spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but when that desire to swing around New York hits you, it truly hits you.
Spider-Man 2, the PlayStation-owned studio Insomniac Games’ long-awaited sequel, was finally released last Friday (20 October) to rave reviews and enthusiastic fan response.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced in a blog post earlier this week that Spider-Man 2 has become “the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in PlayStation history in the first 24 hours”.
That’s a lot of copies.
The game is arguably one of the biggest games of the year and it was released alongside Super Mario Bros Wonder and Sonic Superstars. However, Spider-Man 2 is still a long way from beating out Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which sold a whopping 10 million copies in the first three days.
In the game, you play as both Peter Marker and Miles Morales as you must defeat quite the roster of iconic Spidey villains, including Kraven the Hunter and Venom.
“Insomniac Games holds itself to incredibly high standards when it comes to delivering engaging and innovative gameplay experiences,” said Eric Lempel of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac Games’ third instalment in the franchise for PlayStation. Built from the ground up to take advantage of the unique features of PlayStation 5, the goal was to massively build off the action, storylines, and features from the first two games. With an epic storyline, two playable Super Heroes, a visually-stunning Marvel’s New York, and so much more, this is a game you can get lost in for hours. On behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment, I want to say thank you to the fans – we truly hope you are enjoying your time playing as Peter and Miles in this amazing adventure.”
