Some awful news to wake up to this morning: the filmmaker Rob Reiner, and his wife Michele, have been discovered at their home in Los Angeles. Both have passed away.

Rob Reiner was 78 years old, Michele Reiner was 68. Inevitably, thereโ€™s an awful lot of gossip surrounding the nature of their passing, which we won’t delve into here. For movie nerds, itโ€™s a hell of a loss.

There was a period in the 1980s and 1990s where Rob Reiner directed Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men in a row. Either side of that, he was making films like This Is Spinal Tap and The American President, and just this year he released his latest movie, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. Heโ€™d done the press tour, he’d given fresh interviews, and there was every sign that he was gearing up for more projects as well.

Reiner also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, known for movies such as The Shawshank Redemption and In The Line of Fire, to name but two.

I donโ€™t know too much about Michele Reinerโ€™s work as an actor and photographer, but donโ€™t want to leave her out of this piece. The pair married in 1989, and had three children. Thoughts are very much with them at the moment.

Rob Reiner was the son of actor and writer Carl Reiner, who passed back in 2020 at the age of 98. The picture you see accompanying this post is of the father and son at the formerโ€™s handprint ceremony in Los Angeles.

Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, rest in peace. Itโ€™s awful news to wake up to, and our thoughts are very much with their family and friends.
