Confirming earlier reports, British actor Stephen Graham has a major role in Michael Mann’s upcoming Heat 2.
Update: Stephen Graham, star of Adolescence, The Virtues and too many other great things to list, has landed a major role in Heat 2.
As reported by Variety, Graham will join a starry cast which so far includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and more besides (see below for earlier casting updates).
Who Graham will play hasn’t been announced as yet, though there have been persistent rumours that he’ll play the younger Neil McCauley, the master thief previously played by Robert De Niro in 1995.
It’s a slightly odd choice if true, since Graham is roughly the same age as De Niro was when he starred in Heat; the source novel takes place partly in 1988. Maybe a bit of digital de-aging will be used in these sequences, since parts of the story also take place in 1995, around the time of the first movie, and then fast-forward to 2000.
Graham’s a terrific actor, though, and he’s sure to bring his fascinating mix of intensity and tenderness to an already iconic role.

28th August 2026: Hollywood gossip can often be wide of the mark, and it certainly seems to be the case here. It was recently rumoured that Inde Navarrette, the star of horror phenomenon Obsession, had been offered a part in Michael Mann’s Heat 2 but ultimately turned it down in favour of a Marvel movie.
According to Heat 2 executive producer Shane Salerno, however, there’s only a grain of truth to the story. Navarrette did have a meeting with Mann, Salerno told TheWrap, but no offer was made. By extension, there was no role to turn down.
“It’s simply untrue,” is his short and sweet response.
What is true, though, is that Navarrette will play Rogue in Marvel’s X-Men reboot, which is quite a development for her career in itself, given that she was largely unknown just a few months ago.

Among the actors attached to Heat 2 are Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Adam Driver and Stephen Graham. Backing up earlier stories, Deadline reports that Odessa Young is in talks to play Charlene Shiherlis, a role occupied by Ashley Judd in the 1995 original.
Filming on Heat 2 is said to be getting underway this November, so some confirmations of who’s playing who (what are you, an owl?) should emerge soon. Just don’t expect Inde Navarrette to be among those names.

20th August 2026: A bit of casting news for Heat 2, which is set to begin production this November. The biggest story, perhaps, involves Inde Navarrette, the breakout star of this year’s horror hit, Obsession.
Michael Mann and his collaborators had reportedly wanted the actor to play Charlene Shiherlis, the character previously played by Ashley Judd in the 1995 original. According to Page Six, Navarrette’s commitment to playing Rogue in the upcoming X-Men reboot in the works at Marvel means she’s had to turn the Mann offer down.
Nexus Point News writes, meanwhile, that while Odessa Young is being ‘considered’ for the role of Charlene, Mann’s team is still keen to have Navarrette involved, and have her in mind for a smaller role, playing a character named Gabriela.
Eiza Gonzalez, known for her work in Guy Ritchie joints The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, In The Grey and Michael Bay’s the Ambulance (among other things) is also said to be in the mix for the role of Elisa, the girlfriend of Neil McCauley (Stephen Graham, who’s rumoured to be taking over from Robert De Niro).
The casting highlights the time-hopping nature of Mann’s new thriller. In the source novel, Gabriela is Elisa’s daughter; she’s eight years old in 1988, but the story also jumps ahead to the mid-90s, and catches up with Gabriela again when she’s in her 20s.

6th July 2026: A film we’ve been writing about for what feels like an eternity, Heat 2 appears to be finally getting underway. Director Michael Mann has previous teased that the sequel’s production is imminent on Instagram, and now comes a report from TheWrap that filming is expected to begin in November.
We’d previously heard that Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Driver were all up for roles in the thriller, all playing characters previously occupied by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer.
There was previously a bit of confusion, however, over who DiCaprio would play: would it be thief Chris Shiherlis (played in 1995’s Heat by Kilmer) or detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino)?
According to TheWrap’s sources, this has finally been sorted out. DiCaprio will play Shiherlis, while Bale will star as Hanna.
As for Adam Driver, the natural assumption might be that he’d play Neil McCauley, the ice-cool bank robber previously embodied by Robert De Niro. Instead, TheWrap’s sources suggest, Driver will play the antagonist, Wardell, while Adolescence star Stephen Graham will play McCauley.
Money has long been a stumbling point for Mann’s sequel. Based on a novel Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardner, it’s a sprawling affair that takes in multiple global locations and time periods. Warner Bros was bankrolling Heat 2 for a while, but then got nervous about the budget; it’s now being funded by Amazon MGM. The action set-pieces, per TheWrap’s sources, are said to be much bigger in scale than those in the 1995 original, which is where some of the reported $170m budget may be going.
Can Mann make a sequel that comes remotely close to matching what is arguably one of the great 20th century thrillers? With filming a matter of months away, we’re edging closer to finding out.
