Peter Weir’s Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World is heading to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format this summer. More here.

Now here’s some terrific news. For those who support and enjoy the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format, a treat is on the way, thanks to the news that Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World is finally coming to the format.

Based on the books by Patrick O’Brian, 2003’s movie was directed by Peter Weir, who apparently didn’t have a huge amount of fun making it. But heck, what a job he did. With liberal lashings of ‘they don’t make them like this anymore’, the story of Captain Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin and the HMS Surprise in the early 1800s remains one of the best blockbuster movies of the 2000s. Sadly, its box office didn’t return enough funds to persuade 20th Century Fox to pursue this as a movie franchise, but the film we get is some consolation.

20th Century Fox, of course, has long become part of the Disney empire, and Disney’s approach to physical media for many years has been on the tepid side. Right up until it inked a venture with Sony in the US last year, that’s suddenly unlocked a whole bunch of titles. Kingdom Of Heaven, for instance, is just being released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

And now we have confirmation that Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World – complete with the best telling of a weevils joke you’ll ever hear on film – is due over the summer. The formal announcement of the title hasn’t come through yet, but The Digital Bits is reporting that it’s definitely coming. Furthermore, that retailers are slowly beginning to list the title for preorder.

Both standard and Steelbook editions will be going up for preorder shortly, and when we get listings for the pair, we’ll update this post.

Con Air next, please…
