Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer lead the much-loved Tombstone, that comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK next month. More here.
Here’s some surprising and very welcome news: the much-loved 1990s action western Tombstone is getting a fresh physical media release. More than that, too: it’s coming to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.
Starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, there’s quite the production story behind Tombstone, a movie that was reportedly ghost-directed by Russell in the end. It was made against a ferociously tight schedule too, and the story was explored in this episode of the Film Stories podcast.
The distribution rights for Tombstone was fractured around the world for a little while too, but it looks as if they’ve been reunited under Disney ownership, hence the 4K remaster and the new disc release. It’d already been announced in the US, and it’s a nice surprise to see it turning up in the UK as well.
It’s arriving on 28th April 2025. You can find the listing for the regular 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition here, and there’s a Steelbook edition here as well. Both are available for preorder now.
The disc comes with extra features as well. In this instance, you’re getting this little lot…
The Making of Tombstone: An Ensemble Cast
Making an Authenic Western
The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Directorās original storyboards: O.K. Corral Sequence
And there’s a not particularly long synopsis to savour over, if you’re unfamiliar with the movie. It reads as follows…
Justice is coming! Wyatt Earpās plans to retire anonymously in Tombstone, Arizona, are disrupted by the kind of outlaws he was famous for eliminating and results in the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Tombstone did battle with Lawrence Kasdan’s Wyatt Earp at the box office of course, the two competing projects racing to the big screen, and the former winning the battle. Still, if Warner Bros would be inclined, I’d happily watch Wyatt Earp in 4K as well thank you very much.
For now, we get Tombstone. And that’s not a bad start…
