The planned Minecraft movie has added Matt Berry to its roster, co-starring with Jason Momoa: more details right here.

It’s been in gestation for an awful long time, but it finally looks as if Warner Bros might be making some progress with its planned Minecraft movie. Surely in no way related to the fact that The Super Mario Bros Movie has grossed over $1bn this year, the accelerator appears to have pressed down on the project, with the news that Matt Berry has signed up to co-star.

He’s going to be joining the already-appointed Jason Momoa as one of the headliners of the film, which last time we heard was going to be a hybrid of live action and animation.

Jared Hess, who has the small matter of Napoleon Dynamite to his name, is the latest director to join the film. He’s working to a release date too, with the film currently scheduled for April 4th 2025. It’s unclear what state the screenplay is in though, and if it’s not ready, then the current ongoing writers’ strike may well have something to say about that.

More news on the film as we hear it. But given how long it’s taken to get this far – we’re nearly up to a decade on the development clock – we’ll treat everything as a surprise if and when it happens.
