Maura Tierny will join Zac Efron in Sean Durkin’s planned biopic of the Von Erich family, a legendary pro-wrestling dynasty.

With the inherent silliness of its concept, pro-wrestling is generally considered to something aimed squarely at children. However, peel back the surface of some of these American icons, travelling the country almost every day of the year to put their bodies through all manner of physical duress, and you’ll find some truly tragic tales.

This line of thought was explored in the 2008 documentary film, Beyond The Mat whilst Darren Aronofsky also delved into the idea in dramatic fashion in 2008’s The Wrestler. We have similar hopes for director Sean Durkin’s follow up to The Nest, an enjoyable drama which showcased the Durkin’s aptitude for effective character study.

The Iron Claw will almost certainly allow Durkin to flex those muscles once more, being a ‘gritty and transformative’ wrestling drama that follows the Von Erichs, a legendary family in the pro-wrestling world who have been beset by tragedy.

Thanks to Deadlinewe now know who will be playing the matriarch of that family too. Maura Tierny, the veteran ER actor who has also appeared in films such as The Report and Beautiful Boy, has been cast in that role. As previously reported, the film will star Zac Efron, whilst Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany and Jeremy Allen White have all been announced as appearing too.

A24 is backing the project, along with Access Entertainment, and BBC Films. We’re keeping our hopes up for The Iron Claw as it really could be one to watch. We’ll bring you more on the production as we hear it.
