The Mean Girls musical’s movie adaptation is moving forward, with cast members now confirmed for the production.

Mean Girls is one of the definitive comedies of the 2000s. Tina Fey’s screenplay sparked a coming of age film that is beloved by those who grew up with it, launching the big screen careers of Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried as the film’s reputation grew.

If you’ve not had the pleasure, the movie follows new girl Cady as she attempts to fit in an a new school, being drawn into the titular clique whilst clashing with their leader, Regina George.

Although a sequel was produced for television to near universal critical disdain in 2011, it’s the stage musical that has taken on a life of its own. Opening on Broadway in 2018, Fey wrote the book for it, with her husband Jeff Richmand composing the music to Neil Benjamin’s lyrics. All are returning for the film.

Casting has now been confirmed for the film as well. Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey will play Cady, Regina, Janis and Damian, respectively.

Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne are directing, with Fey returning to pen the screenplay and co-produce alongside Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.

Mean Girls: The Musical will premiere on Paramount Plus, no release date has yet been announced as of yet. 2023 seems a good bet, though.
