Mia Goth is surely the undisputed First Lady of Horror at the moment. Not only is she collaborating with Ti West on their acclaimed horror trilogy for A24, but she also earned rave reviews for her role in Brandon Cronenberg’s recent release, Infinity Pool. Then there’s those unconfirmed stories of her having been cast opposite Andrew Garfield in a Guillermo del Toro Frankenstein movie for Netflix.
Will that project happen? Surely life is never that kind, but either way, with Ti West’s Pearl recently releasing to strong reviews and Goth’s performance coming in for particular praise, the actor is riding high at the moment and that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the high-ups at Marvel Studios.
The studio is looking to get its long-gestating take on the vampire slayer, Blade, into production in June and as such casting is beginning to take shape. We know that the mighty Mahershala Ali will be playing the titular Daywalker, but Goth’s casting is the first announced name to join him.
Yann Demange, the director known for Lovecraft Country, is helming the project and with two actors like Goth and Ali, we’re hoping the film edges away from the goofy comedy that Marvel seems to delight in these days and instead moves towards something edgier that this talented duo can get their teeth into.
Goth will be wrapping up work on MAXXXINE first with director Ti West, concluding their trilogy of horror flicks for A24. With Blade's production date looming, we’d expect to hear more casting news soon and will keep you posted, but if nothing else this report seemingly gets things off to a good start for Blade.
