Mike Leigh’s new film is finally going into production, his first since 2018’s Peterloo.

Mike Leigh, ever the auteur, is finally moving ahead with his next project, and it’ll be his first new movie for five years. His film releases have been more sporadic in recent years, but it’s very much a case of quality over quantity, from Lesley Manville and Jim Broadbent’s heartbreaking performances in Another Year, Timothy Spall’s astonishing turn as Mr Turner in 2014, to 2018’s Peterloo.

Known for his improvisational method of creating characters, Leigh has private conversations with his actors before introducing them to each other, and over an intensive couple of weeks, even months, the characters are developed. From these improvisations, Leigh writes the final shooting script.

Leigh is revealing nothing about his new film, not even to potential buyers. Going under the name Untitled Mike Leigh 2023, the film was due to go into production in 2020, but presumably it wasn’t under the same working title then. We pieced that together ourselves.

We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
