It seems Paramount is already on board and Top Gun 3 ideas are already being mooted, following Top Gun: Maverick's impressive box office haul.
Top Gun: Maverick has raked in over a billion dollars at the box office and continues to do very strong business. The film is one of those rare beasts, a blockbuster franchise movie that delivers on every level you’d hope for. As popcorn flicks go, it’s a hard one to top and that general feeling has been widely reflected in the film’s monstrous profits.
Amid a career of making blockbuster movies, the film has become Tom Cruise’s most profitable project and as such, it’s unsurprising to hear that all involved have quickly begun mooting the prospects of a third film in the series. Whilst Paramount would no doubt love to sign up the film’s new generation of pilots and spin the property off into an exclusive prestige TV series to bolster its Paramount+ streaming platform, that’s unlikely. It remains abundantly clear just how protective Cruise is about maintaining his status as one of the last stars out there to not transition to the small screen in some capacity and that extends to the projects in which he is involved.
Another cinematic Top Gun sequel is looking more likely though, and it’s clear to see the benefits of such a project for all parties. Maverick co-star, Miles Teller has confirmed that talks have been happening, telling Entertainment Tonight that ‘that would be great, but that’s all up to TC. It’s all up to Tom. I’ve been having some conversations with him about it. We’ll see.”
Teller also added how thankful he was for the role, saying “for him to share Top Gun with me and a lot of these other young actors it’s just been such a wild ride, and it’s still going.”
Despite Cruise being notoriously protective of the franchises in which he is involved, it’s easy to see how this one could come together if all parties can agree on a unified direction. Cruise has styled himself over the last few years as cinema’s saviour, his leaked rant on the set of the Mission: Impossible films and his filmed ‘adverts’ for post-covid cinema trips and correct TV cinema settings developing this idea of a movie star whose drive is to safeguard the big screen. Perhaps more than any other film released since the pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick has achieved those aims, so even if another film doesn’t get off the ground, Maverick will still stand as a resounding achievement by all involved.
