Russell T Davies confirms that the BBC and Disney+ havenāt yet given the greenlight to more Doctor Who ā more on the story here.
Post-production work is ongoing on Doctor Who season two/series 15, with Ncuti Gatwa and co having already filming the episodes for next year’s run of the show. Russell T Davies is once again overseeing, and the programme is being funded by both Disney+ and the BBC.
Russell T Davies had mentioned earlier this year that while he’s writing episodes for a season three/series 16, he hadn’t had a decision from Disney as to whether it’s going to bankroll more episodes. Now, many months on from that, he still finds himself in the same boat.
He’s confirmed this to SFX magazine in its new issue, reasoning that āit’s an industry decision, itās like any business – these things take time.”
He adds that “I think the decision will come after the transmission of season two. Thatās what weāre expecting, thatās what weāve always been heading towards.ā
Pretty much as you were, then, and by the sounds of it, we won’t be getting any kind of firm decision on the show’s future until around the middle of 2025. By that stage, we’ll have got Steven Moffat’s upcoming Christmas special, and all of the episodes that make up the next run of the programme.
Davies, by the sounds of it, will have things in a position to move relatively quickly by the time he gets a yay or nay from Disney in particular. Thus, it’s a bit more of a waiting game for the time being.
In the meantime, production is now underway on spin-off series The War Between The Land And The Sea, that Davies has penned with Pete McTighe. This is going to be a five-part series for which we don’t currently have a transmission date. Will keep you posted on that…
