The quick ‘where we’re up to’ on Doctor Who. The BBC and Disney+ had a partnership in place on the show for the last few years, which resulted in a ton of Disney cash being flooded into the programme. That deal is now officially over, and showrunner Russell T Davies has left Doctor Who for a second time. Meanwhile, the BBC has put the programme out to tender at it seeks another partner.

Anyway, we’ve got a rumour. One that’s sort of been denied, but also unearthed genuine interest in tendering for it.
It’s come from America, with Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment.
Devlin’s CV includes the likes of Geostorm, Stargate, Independence Day, the mighty Geostorm, Universal Soldier, Independence Day: Resurgence and Geostorm.
More recently, on television, his company has been working on The Librarians and The Ark as of late, both of which are currently running in the US.
As per a report at The Times, that also popped up at Cultbox and Dark Horizons, Electric Entertainment was said to have been in talks with the BBC over the show, with an approach made to David Tennant over a possible return to the TARDIS.
Get the brakes on though, as it turns out this report was premature.
Whilst Devlin has worked with Tennant before, directing him in the film Bad Samaritan that landed back in 2018, there’s little substance to the story at the moment. However, the denial that Dean Devlin has issued has unearthed the fact that he has a definite interest.
He told the Radio Times that “it is untrue we have had negotiations with the BBC” but did admit that “when the proper time comes when they are prepared to speak with people, we certainly hope to have a discussion with them.”
Given it’s a public service broadcaster, there’s a strict way the BBC has to go about the tendering process, and so back channels conversations are unlikely. But we do at least have one known candidate for the show.
More as we hear it. Might still be a while yet. The race is on as to what we get first: a new James Bond, or a new production company for Doctor Who. Place your bets..
