Disney+ is working on a new, live-action TV series about Casper The Friendly Ghost from the producers of Goosebumps.
Casper The Friendly Ghost is the latest classic character to get its own TV series. Deadline reports that Disney+ is currently developing a live-action series featuring everyone’s favourite ghost.
The series comes from Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston who also executive produced Disney+’s Goosebumps series. That series, which debuted in 2023, was met with positive reviews and strong viewership so Casper seems to be in good hands.
No plot details are available yet – it’s still early days – but Deadline understands that the new Casper series would borrow a page from Netflix’s Wednesday’s book and go for a darker approach.
Letterman and Winston are set to write the series and Letterman will also direct. Steven Spielberg, who also produced the 1995 Casper film, will executive produce with the pair.
Casper The Friendly Ghost has been around since 1945 when the character first appeared in a cartoon. Since then, Casper has featured in numerous comics, films, TV shows and video games.
The 1995 film, simply titled Casper, starred Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman with Malachi Pearson voicing the titular translucent ghost. That film was due to have a sequel but one never materialised although Simon Wells wrote a script for it and was due to direct it.
Wells was also supposed to work on a new reboot in 2013 with DreamsWorks Animation, but nothing came of that either.
It looks like this one might finally bring Casper back to our screens, but we’ll keep you updated if anything changes.
