Rich Moore, he of The Simpsons and Zootopia, is directing a film for the first time since 2018: Jack And The Beanstalk.
Rightly a much-lauded name in the world of animation, Rich Moore is a man who has Emmys, Annies and an Oscar to his name. His CV includes movies and TV shows such as The Simpsons, Futurama, Wreck-It Ralph and the first Zootopia (Zootropolis) film. After a long stint at Disney, he left the studio for Sony in 2019, with the intention of directing the film Vivo. Not a bad film that, either, but in the end, Moore didn’t direct it, serving as producer instead.
Fast forward to now. He signed up to Skydance Animation in 2022, with the talk at the time being an animated Jack And The Beanstalk story. Unlike Vivo, that’s no pressing ahead, with Rich Moore very much directing.
Cinesite is the company taking on some of the actual animation heavy lifting on the movie, having previously worked on the likes of Animal Farm and Swapped, with Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn also on its roster.
As you can see from this piece over at Animation Magazine, recruitment is now underway for the production of Jack And The Beanstalk. This is a project being made with Netflix money, and speculative applications are being encouraged by Cinesite for those interested in working on the film. You’ll need to be in Canada, but there’s a good bus from Halesowen that can get me to New Street Station in Birmingham, and I’m sure I can work things out from there.
The resultant movie will be Rich Moore’s first as director for since 2018 (Ralph Breaks The Internet), and if that’s not an excuse to dig out one of his finest episodes of The Simpsons – ‘Cape Feare’ – then I’m not sure what is.
Still a few years off, but the film is clearly, actually happening. More as we hear it…
