Billed as Tom Cruise’s film in the franchise, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is said to be nearing the $400m mark.

Back in October we covered a story which stated that the ongoing complications of filming the eighth Mission: Impossible film meant that its budget had reached the $300m mark, with no signs of the spending slowing down.

The production has had to deal with a freakish amount of turbulence that includes (takes a deep breath) a global pandemic, months of shutdown due to Hollywood strikes and a faulty crane which suspended production yet again because they couldn’t move their $25m submarine around.

Almost six months on from that report, Puck is now claiming that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning's budget has hit the $400m mark, making it one of the most expensive productions of all time.

As it stands, JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently holds the record, weighing in at a net price tag of $447 million. There’s a chance yet that the next Mission film can off-set some of that production cost with tax rebates, but it’s still an expensive film, not least when you consider the huge costs involved in marketing the film too.

The last instalment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning made around $570m worldwide, meaning this film will have to surpass its predecessor by some way if it wants to become profitable during its theatrical run. Tom Cruise has form in this area though: Top Gun: Maverick released in 2022 and was the biggest commercial success of his career, earning $1.5bn at the box office in a post-pandemic world. With the right film at the right time, it can be done.

The Final Reckoning is slated to release on the 23rd May, and given the ceaseless wave of rotten luck that the production has endured, we’re hoping that it can release to some kind of success, not least for the many talented folk who’ve worked so hard on it for so long.

That release date isn’t far away now and we’d expect the promotional blitz to begin in pretty short order. We’ll bring you more on Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning as we hear it.
