Is it a flawless victory? Here’s the bloody first trailer for the new Mortal Kombat movie, that’s arriving this spring.
We’ve seen two Mortal Kombat movies already back in the 1990s, as the films sought to make capital out of the popular game franchise’s initial boom in popularity. Interest in the game series has endured though, and with it, interest in the series’ characters and stories.
A web and TV series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, followed at the beginning of the last decade, and now we’re getting another reinvention of the saga with the upcoming Mortal Kombat, directed by Simon McQuoid and coming to us courtesy of Warner Bros.
The trailer itself has just landed, and has some nice nods to the original game series, promising a few surprise characters as well as the already announced roster of Kano, Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Jax, Lui Kang, Mileena and Shang Tsung.
Frankly, if Jean-Claude Van Damme doesn’t turn up as a grizzled, ageing Johnny Cage, then we might have to quietly shelve another of our childhood dreams, but don’t worry, we’ll deal with it somehow.
The film is set to release in the US at least, on April 16 and if the trailer is anything to go by, will certainly capture the violent spirit of the original games. Ahead of the film’s release, get your first glimpse below.
