We’re a bit late to the party on this one, admittedly, but our lingering affection for Nintendo’s sadly-neglected Mother (or Earthbound) series is such that we had to share this bit of news with you.
A fan-made Mother 4 project, originally announced way back in 2010 before going a bit quite for a few years, is very much alive and well – and there’s a trailer to prove it, which you can find below.
Now entitled Oddity – to avoid the unwanted attention of Nintendo’s lawyers – this is very much a spiritual successor to the Mother series, from its top-down RPG trappings to its likeably off-beat story.
“Oddity is a surreal urban fantasy role-playing game set in the seventies,” its developers write. “Play as Travis Fields, an ordinary boy who leaves home in a bid to save the world. Travis takes to the field armed with a baseball bat and pellet gun… along with powers he’s only now discovering.”
Given that Nintendo don’t seem in much of a rush to continue the series – the last release, the Japan-only Mother 3, came out in 2006 – this is likely about as close as we’ll get to a proper sequel for the time being. Not that we know when Oddity's going to be released, exactly; for now, its creators will only say it’ll be out “when it’s ready”.
Still, there’s always the trailer to tide us over – and here it is…
