Scott Cooper’s The Pale Blue Eye starring Christian Bale and Harry Melling is inbound and you can get your first look here.  If you haven’t yet seen Scott Cooper’s last film, Antlers, we’d recommend checking it out. Whilst it wasn’t to everybody’s tastes, Cooper stylishly suffuses the film with atmosphere and mood and as such, we can’t think of anybody we’d rather see tackle a Gothic mystery, the genre that is defined more than anything else by stye and tone. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this incoming Netflix production also has Christian Bale and Harry Melling (who plays none other than Edgar Allen Poe!) leading a superb cast that includes Gillian Anderson, Timothy Spall, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones and Robert Duvall. The only real downside here is that it doesn’t look like we’ll get to enjoy this one on a cinema screen, but if this is the only way this project could be brought to life, then fair enough. Bale is doing an excellent line in grizzled and world-wearied at the moment, following a fine turn in David O Russell’s Amsterdam, not to mention achieving the tall order of actually bringing some pathos to a Marvel villain in this year’s Thor: Blood And Thunder.  The Pale Blue Eye also features Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Fred Hechinger, Hadley Robinson, Joey Brooks, Brennan Keel Cook, Gideon Glick, Matt Helm, Steven Maier and Charlie Tahan. You’ll be able to see it on Netflix on January 6th but in the meantime, you can catch the short trailer below.
