Netflix has unveiled its slate for 2024 and we can expect firm favourites like Squid Game and The Umbrella Academy to return.
Netflix has released an impressive, three-minute trailer which showcases its original films and TV shows for 2024.
Amongst those are familiar favourites like The Diplomat, Bridgerton and The Umbrella Academy, but also some new projects such as Jennifer Lopez saving the world in Atlas, Cameron Diaz’s comeback film Back In Action and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Eddie Murphy is also returning to his iconic role of Axel Foley in a new Beverly Hills Cop movie.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the trailer is our first look at footage from the new season of Squid Game. The South Korean series was a huge success for Netflix, making history as the first show not in English to be nominated for Best Drama at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
It’s a brief look, admittedly, but it’s concrete evidence that a new season is on the way and we won’t have to wait long for it. At least, hopefully.
It looks like Seong Gi-hun is after revenge having survived the brutal games of first season. “You’re going to regret the choice you made. I will find you,” he snarls into a phone.
We’ll also be saying goodbye to a lot of series this year. Cobra Kai, Sweet Tooth and the aforementioned Umbrella Academy will be airing for the last time this year, but then again, if they’ll stay on Netflix’s catalogue, we can always return to them.
Of the films, we’re quite intrigued by Atlas. Here’s the official synopsis: “Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”
We’re with you, Jen, we don’t trust AI either.
Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron are also reuniting in The Family Affair after starring together in The Paperboy in which Kidman memorably pissed on Zac Efron after the latter’s character suffered a jellyfish sting. Kidman did it for real, too, going full method for the part.
The Family Affair, to our knowledge, won’t require her to urinate on Efron or him returning the favour, but here’s the synopsis anyway: “A surprising romance kicks off comic consequences for a young woman (Joey King), her mother (Nicole Kidman), and her movie star boss (Zac Efron) as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity.”
